Description:

A HistoryTrek that traces the events of the rebellion against Austria-Hungary known as the “Ten days of Brescia” (23 March to 1 April 1849).

We will depart from Largo Torrelunga where the fighting was fierce and where monuments and bullet holes remind us of the rising of the Brescians against the Austrians – a part of the Risorgimento. We will proceed along Corso Magenta until we reach the (deconsecrated) church of San Barnaba – a place of struggle and memory. We will continue towards Piazza Loggia, seeing monuments along the way. The revolt began in Piazza Loggia and there we will visit the formal spaces of the Loggia (city hall). We will briefly stop at the statue known as the “Bella Italia” and then we will move on to Tito Speri square.  There we will see the statue and plaques that commemorate the terrible events of those days. We will then walk up to the castle, pausing to see the monument to Padre Maurizio Malvestiti, the Austrian governor’s house and the place where insurgents were executed by the Austro-Hungarian authorities.

We will leave the castle by the Relief Road – the route that the Austro-Hungarians used to take the castle – and then walk to the monumental cemetery designed by Vantini. (we may also use the regular city bus to accomplish this part). At the cemetery we will end our tour, seeig the monuments of Nugent, Tito Speri, Prodi Bresciani and Padre Maurizio Malvestiti.
