Description:

The tour begins at Cividate Camuno, which can be reached by train (Trenord – http://www.trenord.it/EN/) or private transport.

From there, after a brief stop at the Cividate Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre, we will begin to climb above the town of Cividate.  The path will bring us to shrines, small chapels of the Stations of the Cross and churches before we reach the large gilded statue of Christ the King and the church of Saint Mary Magdalene (16th century).  Near the church, we will visit the beautiful room dedicated to Saint Martha with its late 15th century frescoes attributed to the painter Paolo da Caylina the Elder.

A slight deviation from the path brings us to the medieval Oratory of San Defente (13th century) and then we re-join the main path leading to the summit of Saint Michael’s hill. Here we make a short stop to see the remains of a Lombard (early medieval) tower and walls that pre-date it. We then continue to the church of Saint Lawrence above the town of Berzo Inferiore. We will visit the beautiful church, of medieval origin but renovated in the 15th century, with its marvellous 15th century fresco cycle including notable images of San Glisente (by tradition, a commander in Charlemagne’s army who chose the religious life).

After a pause to enjoy our packed lunches, we will continue along the path to our final stop: the Romanesque church of the Holy Trinity above the town of Esine with its 15th century chapel of Saint Roch and its frescoes by the painter Giovanni Pietro of Cemmo. We then continue along our route, closing the loop of our trek at Cividate Camuno.
